On the airport at Unalakleet
Total flying time from Golovin to Unalakleet is 1.5 hours. We don't fly direct across Norton Sound (too much cold water below), but more along the coastline to the east and then south. Jack says in the winter people cross the sound by snowmobile or ATV. During this flight we see what appears to very light snow flakes, but otherwise no weather problems. The Unalakleet airport is located right next to the water and we make a straight-in approach landing to the south. On final approach, we pass through some light rain showers to make the landing more interesting.

The General Store in Unalakleet, Alaska
The town is named for the Unalak (Oon'-uh-lack) people, but seems most people pronounce the town name (yoon'-uh-luh-kleet).

There's Jack and Jennifer's apartment
After landing, we are met at the airport by Jennifer's Aunt Fran and given a full tour of the town. Since she has lived here all of her life, she knows much of the history of this area and makes a very knowledgeable guide.

The Unalakleet school where
Jack & Jennifer will teach
Soon we arrive at Fran's home and meet Gray-A (Grandma) and we all participate in a video taping session introducing ourselves for later viewing, (Unless we wind up on the cutting-room floor). After a short look around her garden and the fish-drying shed, we borrow her truck and head for the Degnen's home. Jennifer's parents are not home so we help ourselves to the food and pilot bread, then settle down for a good night's rest.
